Blue Sky Broadens Its Mission

by | Sep 20, 2021 | Updates

Blue Sky was founded for the purpose of meeting the medical needs of the indigent Haitian population principally by providing surgical care to patients of all ages.  The volunteers of Blue Sky have been caring for indigent Haitians since the devastating earthquake in 2010.  Donations are required to defray the travel expenses incurred by its nursing staff and other team members of Blue Sky, and to pay for medical supplies and equipment.

Whenever feasible to do so, Blue Sky sponsors a medical mission to Haiti each year with a team of highly skilled surgeons, nurses and support personnel who spend a week at the Double Harvest Clinic in Croix de Bouquettes.  The team consists of three surgeons, two anesthesiologists, two nurse anesthetists, twelve nurses and two or three lay people who typically perform over one hundred surgeries on patients ranging in age from 3 months to 90 years.  Blue Sky is supported by such prominent Philadelphia healthcare institutions as the Lankenau Hospital Medical Center and the Holy Redeemer, Thomas Jefferson University, Penn and Main Line Health Systems, among others.

With Haiti now in a state of anarchy and suffering from a COVID surge while digging out from yet another major earthquake, the Board of Directors has decided to broaden Blue Sky’s mission to include financial support for medical and surgical services at other Haitian health care facilities throughout the country. The New Hope Hospital in Cap-Haitien , which a Blue Sky team visited in April , is  just one of those facilities. As recently as this week, medical supplies were gathered for a medical dispensary in Camp-Perrin, a region devastated by the most recent earthquake. To that end, Blue Sky will provide grants to U.S. based public charities whose hospitals and clinics serve the indigenous Haitian population. These grants will help fund capital improvements to those facilities and provide other financial aid needed to sustain and improve their medical/surgical services, including training and education. These grants will be made only after they have been carefully reviewed and approved by the Blue Sky Board of Directors.
